If voluntary member ka ng SSS at buntis ka ngayon, isa sa biggest questions mo is probably this:

“Ano ba talaga ang requirements para makakuha ako ng SSS maternity benefit?”

Good news: puwedeng-puwede kang mag-claim kahit voluntary member ka. Pero kailangan tama ang contributions, tama ang notification, at kumpleto ang documents para hindi ma-delay ang claim mo. SSS grants maternity benefit to female members in every instance of childbirth, miscarriage, or emergency termination of pregnancy, regardless of civil status or employment status, as long as the qualifying rules are met. What Counts as a Voluntary Member?

Under SSS voluntary coverage, a voluntary member can include a formerly employed member who was separated from work, a self-employed member who currently has no income, an OFW after overseas employment ends, or a non-working spouse under the applicable coverage rules. For this post, we’re focusing on female members filing as voluntary members for maternity benefit purposes. (Social Security System)

Who Qualifies for SSS Maternity Benefit as a Voluntary Member?

A voluntary member is qualified for SSS maternity benefit if she has paid at least 3 monthly contributions within the 12-month period immediately preceding the semester of childbirth, miscarriage, or emergency termination of pregnancy, and SSS will only consider contributions paid before the semester of contingency. SSS also requires the voluntary member to notify SSS directly of her pregnancy and probable date of childbirth. (Social Security System)

In simpler terms, hindi sapat na naghuhulog ka lang. Kailangan pasok ang hulog mo sa tamang counting period. At very important ito: kapag nagbayad ka during or after the semester of contingency, hindi na iyon isasama sa maternity benefit computation. (Social Security System)

Main SSS Maternity Requirements for Voluntary Members

1. At least 3 qualifying monthly contributions

Ito ang pinaka-basic requirement. SSS requires at least 3 posted monthly contributions in the 12-month period immediately before the semester of childbirth, miscarriage, or ETP. (Social Security System)

2. Direct notice to SSS upon confirmation of pregnancy

Unlike employed members na dadaan sa employer, voluntary members must notify SSS directly. SSS says SE/VM/NWS/OFW members may give notice through the My.SSS website, SSS Mobile App, or Self-Service Express Terminals. (Social Security System)

3. My.SSS account for online filing

SSS says that effective 01 September 2021, the Maternity Benefit Application is filed online through the member’s My.SSS account. (Social Security System)

4. Enrolled disbursement account in DAEM

Maternity benefits are released only to the member’s approved disbursement account enrolled in the Disbursement Account Enrollment Module (DAEM). SSS also says individual members may enroll up to three disbursement accounts. (Social Security System)

5. Supporting medical or civil registry documents

The exact documents depend on whether your case is live childbirth, stillbirth/fetal death, or miscarriage/ETP. SSS requires scanned copies of the original colored document or a certified true copy with good image quality when filing online. (Social Security System)

Quick Visual: Requirements Checklist

You need all five of these lined up:

RequirementNeeded for Voluntary Members?Notes
3 qualifying monthly contributionsYesMust be within the 12-month period before the semester of contingency
Pregnancy notification to SSSYesDirectly to SSS, not through an employer
My.SSS accountYesNeeded for online filing
DAEM disbursement accountYesRequired for payment release
Supporting documentsYesDepends on live birth, stillbirth, miscarriage, or ETP

The contribution rule, direct-notice rule, online filing rule, and DAEM payment rule all come from SSS’s current maternity benefit guidance. (Social Security System)

What Documents Do Voluntary Members Usually Need?

If your case is live childbirth

SSS accepts any of the following, depending on when you file: a child’s Certificate of Live Birth or Certificate of Death registered with the Local Civil Registrar plus its receipt if filing within 6 months from delivery; the PSA-issued version if filing beyond 6 months; or the equivalent birth/death report from a Philippine Embassy or Consulate or foreign equivalent document with English translation if applicable. (Social Security System)

If your case is stillbirth or fetal death

SSS lists the Certificate of Fetal Death registered with the LCR plus receipt if filed within 6 months, the PSA-issued COFD if later than 6 months, or an equivalent foreign document with English translation if applicable. (Social Security System)

If your case is miscarriage, ETP, ectopic pregnancy, or hydatidiform mole

SSS requires proof of pregnancy, proof of termination of pregnancy, and a medical document signed by a physician. Examples include pregnancy test results, ultrasound, Beta HCG, Early Pregnancy Factor, histopathological report, operating room record, medical certificate, consultation records, or clinical abstract/discharge summary. (Social Security System)

If you were previously employed before becoming voluntary

This is a very important special case. SSS says that for self-employed, voluntary, or OFW members who were previously employed, or for members already separated from employment, additional proof may be required. If the delivery, miscarriage, or ETP happens within the employment period or within 6 months from separation, SSS may require a Certificate of Separation from Employment showing the effective date of separation and that no advance payment was given by the employer. If that cannot be secured, SSS lists situations where an Affidavit of Undertaking may be used instead. (Social Security System)

That means kung dati kang employed and then nag-switch ka to voluntary, huwag i-assume na ordinary voluntary filing lang ito. Madalas dito nagkakaroon ng delay kapag kulang ang separation proof.

How to Notify SSS About Pregnancy as a Voluntary Member

SSS says voluntary members may notify SSS directly through these channels:

Best practice: gawin mo ito as soon as pregnancy is confirmed. Kahit ang line na “immediately” is stated explicitly for employed members notifying their employer, the current SSS framework for maternity notices shows that notice should be made promptly once pregnancy is confirmed, and voluntary members are expected to notify SSS directly through the listed channels. How to File the SSS Maternity Benefit Application

SSS says the Maternity Benefit Application for individual members is filed online through the member’s My.SSS account. The member must upload scanned copies of the required supporting documents with good image quality. (Social Security System)

Simple step-by-step

Step 1: Log in to your My.SSS account. (Social Security System)

Step 2: Make sure your DAEM disbursement account is already enrolled and approved. (Social Security System)

Step 3: Complete your maternity notification if you have not yet done it through My.SSS, the app, or the terminal. (Social Security System)

Step 4: Prepare the correct supporting documents based on your case: live childbirth, stillbirth/fetal death, or miscarriage/ETP. (Social Security System)

Step 5: File the Maternity Benefit Application online through My.SSS. (Social Security System)

Step 6: Monitor your disbursement status inside My.SSS. SSS says electronic notifications are sent once the benefit is credited, and the status can also be viewed in the Inquiry Module. (Social Security System)

How Much Can a Voluntary Member Receive?

SSS computes maternity benefit based on the member’s Average Daily Salary Credit (ADSC). The agency excludes the semester of contingency, looks back 12 months, gets the 6 highest Monthly Salary Credits, divides the total by 180 to get the ADSC, then multiplies it by the compensable days. SSS currently lists 105 days for live childbirth, 120 days for qualified solo parents, and 60 days for miscarriage or ETP, including stillbirth. SSS also notes that benefit computation under the regular program is based on contributions up to ₱20,000 MSC. (Social Security System)

Common Mistakes Voluntary Members Should Avoid

Paying too late

A very common mistake is paying contributions only after pregnancy is already far along, then expecting those late contributions to count. SSS is clear that contributions paid within or after the semester of contingency are not considered in the computation. (Social Security System)

Forgetting to notify SSS directly

Voluntary members do not rely on an employer for notification. If you are filing as VM, the notice should go directly to SSS through the approved channels. (Social Security System)

No DAEM enrollment

Even if your claim is valid, SSS says maternity benefits are released through the approved disbursement account in DAEM. No approved account usually means payment cannot be credited properly yet. (Social Security System)

Wrong documents for your specific case

Live birth, stillbirth, and miscarriage/ETP do not use exactly the same supporting papers. This is where many members get delayed. (Social Security System)

Not preparing extra proof if you were previously employed

If you shifted from employed to voluntary, SSS may require separation-related proof in certain cases. (Social Security System)

Final Thoughts

For voluntary members, the biggest things to remember are simple:

qualifying contributions, direct notice to SSS, DAEM enrollment, and correct documents.

Kapag maaga kang nag-prepare, mas less ang stress at mas maliit ang chance na ma-delay ang claim mo. And if you were previously employed before switching to voluntary, double-check whether SSS might ask for separation-related proof too. That one detail catches a lot of people off guard.
